SUMMARY: Assist adults and children with developmental disabilities complete creative, purposeful projects and activities. Duties in the woodshop will include supervision of consumers all ages groups functioning levels, as well as the supervision of staff members who accompany consumers to the woodshop programs. Will plan various projects based on consumer’s interest, develop a weekly schedule, maintain equipment and inventory, order supplies and effectively implement consumer safety measures in the woodshop area. Will operate machinery such as band saws, drills, sanders etc. and will pre-cut materials for use in woodshop projects.


  • At all times, serve as an advocate for the consumer with whom you work.
  • Provide support and assistance to consumers with developmental disabilities and their families. Work hours may include weekdays, evenings and weekends as designated by the needs of the consumer, and as established by program schedule.
  • Effectively utilize written and oral communication to ensure the completion of all documentation and forms including progress notes, nursing notes, habilitation checklists, and communication logs. Work cooperatively with consumer, family members, supervisor and service coordinators to constructively resolve matters that may arise.
  • Assist Waiver Supervisor, IRA Supervisors, and Service Coordinators with the development and implementation of consumer’s Individualized Service Plan (ISP). Participate in consumer’s ISP meetings as required.
  • Report accidents, incidents or program concerns in a timely manner to supervisor and others as appropriate. Complete incident reports.
  • Perform health care tasks such as monitoring vital signs and medication, under the direction of registered nurses.
  • Assist consumers with personal care, such as ambulation and personal hygiene.
  • Report medical concerns to registered nurse and IRA supervisors.
  • Provide information and refer individuals to Service Coordinator for medical, financial, legal, educational or other assistance.
  • Oversee day-to-day woodshop activities of residents in Residential Habilitation, Day Habilitation, or Respite Programs.
  • Assist with other duties necessary within the programs such as dishwashing, van cleaning, cooking, shopping, collecting receipts and participating in gatherings and parties.
  • Develop blueprints and templates for wood working projects with special consideration the various capabilities of consumers from different age groups.
  • Develop daily activities and projects for the consumers who wish to participate in the woodshop project. Activities will include constructing furniture, household accessories and outdoor displays.
  • Must have a demonstrated ability to operate and maintain equipment such as band saws, drills, sanders, and various other equipment needed to complete projects.
  • Ensure staff are providing needed supervision to ensure the safety of the consumers while completing projects.
  • Maintain an inventory of current supplies and complete monthly order requests to ensure adequate supplies are available.
  • Comfortable familiarity with various finishing techniques including paint, stains and varnishes.
  • Demonstrated positive work history with individuals at all levels

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: Provide guidance to staff to assist consumers with project completion and daily implementation of safety measures.


High School Diploma or GED with minimum 3 years work experience in the field of finish carpentry and 1 year of relevant previous supervisory experience. Experience working with individuals with Developmental Disabilities preferred.

• Only applicants with a significant work history in carpentry, woodworking and prior experience in safety and use of equipment need apply.

• Demonstrated participation and leadership in community organizations.


The Woodshop Supervisor shall have the ability to deliver quality services to consumers with disabilities from all age groups in a wood shop setting and maintain safety awareness at all times.

Internal: Maintain daily contact with supervisors, Medicaid Service Coordinators and

Habilitation Aides to work as a team in delivering Residential

Habilitation, Day Habilitation and Respite services.

External: Maintains contact with internal/external community organizations and retailers as well as families of consumers to assist in improving the quality of life for consumers.

OTHER: This position mandates employees to report to or remain at work in the event of an emergency, crisis situation or staff shortage until relieved by their immediate supervisor.

REASONING ABILITY: Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
