About the Role:
Position Summary: This is a highly customer service-oriented position in which employees should strive to exceed customer expectations. Perform at a journeyman level to construct, repair, restore, and install structural woodwork, masonry, glass and related materials using hand and power tools in accordance with blueprints, specs, established practices and pertinent state and local code. Responsible for estimating material costs and time required to complete project and to inspect work.
Range: $17.02 salary based on experience.
Responsibilities
- Install, repair and maintain drywall in all campus buildings/areas.
- Develop and maintain campus database of paint types and locations.
- Prepare surfaces/areas for painting; this may require removing old paint, filling holes and washing walls using various tools such as sandpaper, wire brushes, scrapers, etc.
- Fill cracks, holes, and joints with caulk, putty, plaster, or other fillers, using caulking guns or putty knives.
- Apply protective and decorative coats of paint, varnish, lacquer, and/or other related materials to interior and exterior surfaces of buildings, furniture, equipment, and other structures.
- Supervise summer paint crew.
- Measure and mark cutting lines on materials, using ruler, pencil, chalk, and marking gauge.
- Shape or cut materials to specified measurements, using hand tools, machines, or power saw.
- Study specifications in blueprints, sketches or building plans to prepare project layout and determine dimensions and materials require.
- Assemble and fasten materials to make framework or props, using hand tools and wood screws, nails, dowel pins, or glue.
- Build or repair cabinets, doors, frameworks, floors, and other wooden fixtures used in buildings, using woodworking machines, carpenter’s hand tools, and power tools.
- Erect scaffolding and ladders for assembling structures above ground level.
- Remove damaged or defective parts or sections of structures and repair or replace, using hand and power tools.
- Install structures and fixtures, such as windows, frames, floorings, and trim, or hardware using carpenter’s hand and power tools.
- Select and order lumber and other required materials.
- Build, install and repair Formica counter tops, bathroom partitions, furniture, carpet, windows, doors cabinets, shelving, bulletin boards, show cases, picture frames, etc.
- Repair and maintain room numbers and signage on campus.
- Learn new Maintenance Mechanic Carpenter/Painter techniques as required to remain up to date with current and new technologies/legal requirements as applicable.
- Live out and make decisions in line with the Clarkson University values in all daily activities.
- Operate and work in a safe manner at all times and ensure the highest level of housekeeping.
- Provide mentoring and leadership to interns, apprentices and/or student workers.
- Willingness to take courses and/or training to meet trade specific and University standards.
- Complete Clarkson Vehicle Safety Checklist before vehicle use. Be responsible for care, cleanliness, and maintenance of assigned vehicle and report all vehicle concerns to appropriate supervisor immediately.
- Operate a Clarkson vehicle in accordance with University policy.
- Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.
- Deliver timely, friendly, and effective service to University faculty, staff and students.

- Ability to gain general knowledge of the campus.
- Participate in reporting of campus damage and/or safety issues.
Minimum Qualifications: High School Diploma or equivalent. Four (4) years of journeyman equivalent experience as a carpenter or painter.
Essential Skills
- Must have enthusiasm for the job, a customer service approach and be willing to work in a team environment.
- Hold a valid NYS driver’s license with a driving record acceptable to meet the University insurance standards.

- Possess general knowledge of the campus layout and building locations.

- Excellent written and oral communication skills.
- Strong organizational skills are required.
- Knowledge of the tools, equipment, materials, and application techniques common to the painting trade.
- Knowledge and skill in hazardous materials handling, application, and disposal.
- Skill in the preparation and application of paints, stains, and surface preparation materials to a wide variety of surfaces.
- Must be able to function under stressful conditions and/or high volume with short turnaround.
