The Saint Regis Mohawk Tribe (SRMT) is committed to providing opportunities for community members and employees to learn our Kanien’kéha (Mohawk language). Housed within the Education Division, community language classes are offered at various times throughout the year for community members and SRMT employees. These classes are typically advertised on the SRMT website and social media pages.
The Kanienkeha Language Program/Ase Tsi Tewaton has implemented a 2 year Adult Language Immersion program. The KLP program is modeled after the Onkwawenna Kentsyohkwa adult program in Ohswe:ken/Six Nations. and with their permission, the curriculum has been adapted to Akwesasne dialect. The program also uses techniques such as reading, writing, listening and dialogues to advance students language learning progression. This program combines an intensive Kanien'keha immersion environment with the opportunity for cultural strengthening, growth and renewal through the interaction between students and language speakers. The goal of the program is to develop language speakers who will share their knowledge and provide beneficial services to the community.
Some of the goals are to:
- Promote everyday use and fluency of Mohawk Language
- Increase the number of speakers
- Develop and conduct language assessments (OPI)
- Coordinate and offer community language courses
